Social Sector

The public sector shapes the framework within which global and local markets operate; the social sector steps in where governments and markets may fall short in supporting underserved communities. Increasingly, actors in these sectors are adopting innovative change models and leveraging learnings, models and partners from the private sector to achieve their goals. Culture Shock’s work across the private, public and social sectors enables us to help clients transform communities around the country.

Primary Education

Culture Shock works with innovative education non-profits and school systems to create better opportunities for underserved students to lead choice-filled lives. We are committed to supporting high-impact organisations in Papua New Guinea looking to transform education throughout the nation and drive lasting, systemic change.

WHAT WE DO

Our education work is focused on five subsectors:

  1. Human capital

Organisations that recruit, train, develop and support highly effective teachers, school leaders and education reform champions.

  2. Reform-minded school systems

Government-run school systems that are proactively implementing student-centric reforms.

  3. Alternative school models

High-quality alternative school networks that support traditionally underserved populations and focus on improving student outcomes.

  4. Child and youth outreach

Organisations that serve high-risk children and youth, improving the chances of future success.

  5. Education technology

Organisations that create, spread and support high-quality instructional tools and models, using technology to improve student learning and outcomes.

Economic Development

Culture Shock’s economic development work leverages the power of markets and business enterprise models to create jobs, fuel income growth and improve the quality of life for those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds in PNG. Culture Shock supports nonprofits and entrepreneurs who seek to bring growth to the communities they serve in effective and sustainable ways. Our rigorous analysis and broad experience help our clients focus their strategies, and grow their donor bases and drive system-level change.

WHAT WE DO

Our economic development work focuses on five sub-sectors:

  1. Entrepreneurship

We partner with investors to support high-impact entrepreneurs and catalyse vibrant, self-sustaining entrepreneurial ecosystems around the country.

  2. "Social-first" impact investing

Impact investors who scale innovative enterprises that deliver affordable, high-quality, critical services —such as clean energy, healthcare, education and financial services — to the poor.

  3. Agriculture and livelihood

Organisations that enhance the livelihood of small-holder farmers by strengthening their capacity and integrating them into agricultural supply chains.

  4. Workforce integration

Organisations that support the development and integration of marginalised groups — such as disabled and/or disadvantaged youth — into the economy.

  5. Sustainable development

Innovative environmental nonprofits who work to preserve our country’s natural resources.
